Title: Educational Programmer
Location: Tse’k’wa National Historic Site, 12629 Butte Lane, Charlie Lake, BC
Wage: $22-24/hour based on experience, plus 4% in lieu of vacation
Contract: Flexible start date until 4 July 2025
Hours: Number of hours to be determined during hiring; 16-35 hours/week.
Schedule: Schedule to be determined during hiring; Typically Monday-Friday; weekends as needed. Must be available June 21st.
Position Summary:
The Educational Programmer will support a variety of educational programming opportunities at Tse’k’wa National Historic Site. Demand for guided tours has exploded across all grade and age levels. Leading tours and educational programs will be central to the role. The position will include mentoring from the Executive Director and cultural knowledge holders to support the selected candidate’s success; it will require flexibility of skills and the ability to work on a variety of related tasks.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Programmer will work under the supervision of and report to the Tse’k’wa Executive Director. They will also collaborate with staff and Knowledge Holders from the three stakeholder First Nations. Duties will may include:
- Conducting tours for local schools, youth groups, and homeschoolers
- Facilitating hands-on learning activities with plants, artifacts, and cultural objects
- Supporting the creation of educational materials for print/web
- Ensuring Elders and Knowledge Keepers have their needs met while onsite
- Preparing supplies and equipment for programs
- Practicing proper care and handling for archaeological artifacts
- Working outside in all weather conditions
- Ensuring covid and safety protocols are followed on site
- Assisting with day-to-day operations including basic cleaning, event preparation, and communication with visitors
- Maintaining privacy and discretion related to cultural knowledge sharing
- Other duties as assigned
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
The Educational Programmer is a hardworking and respectful individual with an interest in local Indigenous history and language, archaeology, and/or the cultural heritage sector. Knowledge of or a willingness to learn about Tse’k’wa and Dane-zaa stories, history, and language is essential.
An ideal candidate would clearly demonstrate:
- Strong communication skills, cultural awareness, and compassion
- Respect for the knowledge and skills of Dane-zaa Elders and Knowledge Keepers
- Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work both independently and as a team member
- Reliability and trustworthiness
- Personal experience with Indigenous cultures, communities, protocols, practices and ways of knowing; knowledge of Dane-zaa communities is an asset
- Reliable transportation to the work location
- Ability to pass a criminal record check as a condition of employment
- Ability to lift and carry 40lbs and to get to/from the cave via a compacted crush agratee trail that is 230m distance and 13m elevation loss/gain with a maximum running slope of 10 degrees and cross slope of 5 degrees to facilitate group tours.

About Tse’k’wa:
Tse’k’wa (“Rock House” in Dane-zaa) is a National Historic Site and exceptional archaeological site with deep cultural and spiritual significance for the Dane-zaa people, dating back ~12,500 years. The site is owned and managed by Tse’k’wa Heritage Society, a collaboration of three partner First Nations: Doig River, Prophet River and West Moberly. The Society has recently completed extensive infrastructure upgrades at the site to facilitate public access, including a new interpretive trail. We offer a variety of public tours, cultural programs, and educational opportunities.
