Alpha Bull Event Raises $34,000 for Tse’k’wa

Alpha Bull hosted a professional bull riding (PBR) event in Dawson Creek on Saturday, December 7th that raised $34,000 for Tse’k’wa National Historic Site.

The partnership between Alpha Bull and Tse’k’wa Heritage Society began three years ago, and has generated over $100,000 for the National Historic Site. The Dawson Creek PBR event combines music, lights, pyrotechnics and bull riding. The main event is preceded by a reception that includes local First Nations, government, industry, and community to learn about Tse’k’wa and provide support through a silent auction.

“Alpha Bull helps us fill a critical need for operational funding. This donation will help support staffing and stewardship of the site, which in turn helps Tse’k’wa carry out educational and cultural programs and meet our long-term goals”, says Alyssa Currie, Tse’k’wa Executive Director. “The value of this event is not just in the funds raised, but in the awareness raised about the site and the connections built between community allies and supporters.”

Garry Oker, Tse’k’wa Board President, led the Doig River Drummers in an opening song and additional performances throughout the night. The drummers were joined by several youth members of Doig River First Nations.

“This is about building it up for the next generation. Tse’k’wa is not only a National Historic Site, but also an official artifact repository. Now, we want to share those artifacts with the public and increase education activities at the site. We’re excited to have everyone help us on those next steps” said Mr. Oker.

Despite weather conditions that prevented some guests and sponsors from attending, the event raised $20,000 for Tse’k’wa National Historic Site. Chad Besplug, owner of Alpha Bull, presented the cheque to Mr. Oker and Ms. Currie on behalf of Tse’k’wa. Having organized PBR events across western Canada, Mr. Besplug shared what makes this event special.

“It is truly an honor to create an event that supports a cause that is important to the First Nations communities here. Alpha Bull wants to celebrate our shared history and respect for the land. Many of our riders are from the First Nations communities and some got their start at their rodeos” says Mr. Besplug. “On a personal level, one of the things I’ve enjoyed about working in Northeastern BC is the lifelong friendships we’ve built here. That’s what cowboy culture is all about. I have a blast hosting this event: bringing people together who love the sport and having fun together, while supporting a great cause.”

Doig River First Nation, one of the three First Nations behind Tse’k’wa, attended the event and pledged an additional $14,000 donation to the Heritage Society. The funds will be used to grow capacity at Tse’k’wa National Historic Site.

Weston Davidson, a 26 year old rider from Strongfield, Saskatchewan was the event champion.
